Why Plumbing Modifications Are Sometimes Necessary for Water Heaters

Without this separation, an electrochemical reaction called galvanic corrosion can gradually damage the connection.

During your installation, dielectric unions may be installed if the new water heater and the existing plumbing use different metals or if the current fittings show signs of corrosion or wear. Some modern water heaters include dielectric nipples instead, so separate unions aren't always necessary. When they’re recommended, though, they're an important upgrade.

Isolation Valves

Isolation valves are shut-off valves installed on the water lines leading to and from your water heater. They allow plumbers to isolate the appliance from the rest of your home's plumbing system without shutting off the main water supply. While a standard tank water heater typically only requires a cold-water shut-off valve, tankless systems often use isolation valve kits that provide access to both the hot and cold water connections.

It can make sense to add these valves if they’re missing, outdated, or recommended for easier servicing. Your plumber will make a judgment call. They're especially common with tankless water heaters because they make routine maintenance, like flushing mineral buildup, much easier.
